Williams was let go from West Bromwich Albion when he was just a teenager. He played non-league football with Hednesford Town, before becoming an official in Stockport County, where he was later named their captain. Williams was later loaned to Swansea City and, after being a part of winning the League One title with them, Williams signed for an amount that set a club record.
